Thermal structure and dynamics of subduction zones: insights from observations and modeling

چکیده
Subduction zones form dominant tectonic features on the Earth and are the site of large underthrusting earthquakes and explosive arc volcanism. They are also the only locations with deep earthquakes in the Earth’s interior. Major questions remain regarding the dynamics of subduction zones, including aspects such as the role of water in the formation of arc volcanism and deep earthquakes, the initiation and stress evolution of subduction zones, the temperature and volatile distribution in the deep slab and overlying mantle wedge, and the r p a s i E c F o c t

The structure and dynamics of the mantle wedge
A large amount of water is brought into the Earth’s mantle at subduction zones. Upon subduction, water is released from the subducting slab in a series of metamorphic reactions. The resulting flux into the mantle wedge modifies its chemical and physical properties by mineral hydration with associated weakening, flux melting and changes in the dynamics and thermal structure of subduction zones. ...
متن کاملConstraints on Subduction Geodynamics from Seismic Anisotropy
[1] Much progress has been made over the past several decades in delineating the structure of subducting slabs, but several key aspects of their dynamics remain poorly constrained. Major unsolved problems in subduction geodynamics include those related to mantle wedge viscosity and rheology, slab hydration and dehydration, mechanical coupling between slabs and the ambient mantle, the geometry o...
متن کاملDynamics of subduction initiation at preexisting fault zones
We show that a new subduction zone can initiate at a preexisting dipping fault zone with reasonable plate forces, consistent with what is observed in the western Pacific. The dynamics of subduction initiation within a viscoelastic medium has been systematically explored with the finite element method. We investigate the compression of oceanic lithosphere with hoth force and velocity boundary co...
متن کاملEarthquake faulting in subduction zones: insights from fault rocks in accretionary prisms
Subduction earthquakes on plate-boundary megathrusts accommodate most of the global seismic moment release, frequently resulting in devastating damage by ground shaking and tsunamis. As many earthquakes occur in deep-sea regions, the dynamics of earthquake faulting in subduction zones is poorly understood. However, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Expe...
متن کاملThermal structure and intermediate-depth seismicity in the Tohoku-Hokkaido subduction zones
The cause of intermediate-depth (> 40 km) seismicity in subduction zones is not well understood. The viability of proposed mechanisms, which include dehydration embrittlement, shear instabilities and the presence of fluids in general, depends significantly on local conditions, including pressure, temperature and composition. The wellinstrumented and well-studied subduction zone below Northern J...
